Can one watch porn to the glory of God?

I randomly checked up on my good buddy Tim Potts (whom I've never actually met...lol). Although I've never talked to him, a good friend of his worked for me last semester and Tim came up a few times in our conversation. According to his friend--who disagrees with him a lot--Tim is somewhat liberal, with some pretty weird views on stuff ranging from total depravity to profanity to "The Purpose-Driven Life."

Well, he's at it again, saying some whacky stuff. In this post, Tim squirms his way out of calling any behavior inherently wrong, rationalizing doing whatever he wants as to the glory of God if he does it "with a constant and genuine spirit and attitute of gratitude." He gave an example of watching the Chepelle Show. By his own admition, he struggled to define how he could watch it "to the glory of God," and finally came up with "by being thankful for humor and the creativity that creates it (the humor that isn't coarse that is)." So what about the coarse humor, Tim? Or other stuff? Is it glorifying to God to watch porn, as long as I do it with a "constant and genuine spirit and attitude of gratitude"?

The truth is, there are things that are always wrong to do. Always. Things that can never be done to the glory of God. I think Tim failed to take into account 1 Corinthians 6:12:
Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.
Yes, we should not be bound by legalism and worrying about every little act we do. But we must not take that freedom to the other extreme and venture into licentiousness.

I'll leave you with his first assertion: Anything we don't do for the glory of God is tainted.

Any comments?

UPDATE: I can't understand this guy. In a response to a comment, he writes
If your gona get drunk, do it for the glory of God. If you’re going to fornicate, fornicate for the glory of God. But is there a way to sin for a righteous and holy purpose? No, therefore we can’t sin for the glory of God. If you apply this verse of “all things” it still applies to them, but only in more of a cynical/mockery manner.
Is it just me, or did he just juxtapose two contradictory statements? Then, one of Tim's friends writes
i'm afraid i just don't care, i make music, it has nothing to do with God, and it makes me happy, and i could care less whether he likes it or not, people need things on a purely human level, regardless of whether it glorifies him or not

I have only one question, you and i both listen to music that certainly doesn't "glorify God," whatever that's suppose to mean...so then why do we listen to it? I mean, should we go buy Micheal W. Smith cds and sing sh--y praise songs? That would probably make me even more upset with this God of ours. I really don't care but that question immediately popped into my head.
And in typical style, Tim responds with:
Michael W. Smith doesn't glorify God because he has sh-t for talent!

No, our secular music glorifies God because it is creative and manifests the creativity God has given man as people in His image. I personally think genuine secular music glorifies God more than processed music with Christian lyrics.

Even I, not exactly not an apologist for CCM, take offense at that comment.

Blogger A Wiser Man Than I said...

For your friend: if intent is the only thing that matters, is watching porn, or the Chapelle show for that matter, equal to say, going to church? This is assuming of course that intent is all that matters.

However, once you say that one thing is better than another--which surely makes the most sense--the next logical step is that some things may not be approved by God. In short, if He likes one thing more than another, He may not like another thing at all. Watching porn cannot be done for the glory of God. It's that simple.

I have heard it said that one should "never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to your level and win from experience."

I am not saying your friend is an idiot, but he is certainly taking the stance of one on this issue.

As to Christian music, there is some good Christian music out there. I'm not completely up on all of it, but if you throw some bands out there, I might be able to give you a comparable Christian band.
