No politics allowed

You know what? I'm getting bored. Bored with some of the comments that indicate we can't seem to agree on anything. Let's have a little relaxing fun! Instead of important things--like Iraq, oil, politics or the size of John Kerry's nose--how 'bout we discuss something unimportant? Like music, or sports, or our 3rd grade crushes.

Now, ever since my T-Ball team disbanded about 14 years ago, I haven't followed sports too closely, except for when (insert local team here) was winning--yes, I'm one of those sports fans. So, I'll leave that discussion to Paul.

But music? Ahh, the lifeblood that keeps mundaneness at bay...

So, to all my 6 or 7 readers: what kind of music do you like? How have your tastes changed? (Does this sound like an 11th grade English quiz or what...) What have you learned from your musical choices? Ignore that last one.

I'll go first. Check the comments.

I like to reminisce about the good 'ole days when I actually liked what was on pop radio. Bands actually wrote their own music, and the airwaves weren't flooded with girl hip-hop groups and bling-bling rap. I didn't mind rap in high school--you know, for parties and just hanging out. But I'd never listen to it for pleasure. Here's what gets my ticker pumping (in no particular order or genre):

Matchbox Twenty, Collective Soul, Counting Crows, 3 Doors Down, Creed, Sister Hazel, Hootie, Chili Peppers, Ben Folds, Ben Harper, Blessid Union, Dave Matthews, Guster, Lifehouse, Jack Johnson, Live, Our Lady Peace, Switchfoot, Tonic, Wallflowers, Duncan Sheik...and that's just a start!

When I was a teenager, I was huge into punk music and heavy metal. Bad Religion, Pennywise, Offspring's first couple of albums (before they went all stupid). My heavy metal tastes including Slayer, Megadeth, and Sepultura.

My two all-time favorites though are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I can't say I dislike anything they have ever done, even though some of it is obviously drug-induced insanity :-)

Wow, did I just date myself or what! Nothing too current on that list!

As for my current musical tastes, I've developed quite the fondness for some of Avril Lavigne's stuff. Nowadays I find it hard to relate to that teanage-angst pop/punk stuff, but lyrically some of her songs are as good as it gets.

Of your list, Our Lady Peace is probably my favorite. They consistenty put out good song after good song.

I think I was in junior high before I even knew what music was. We got my dad this befuddled machine called a "CD player" with two discs (Brooks and Dunn, and Alabama). I can remember sitting on the living room floor with my head crammed between those speakers and just marveling. To this day I can remember all the words to all the songs on both of those CDs.

Temujin, I also enjoy Avril quite a bit--especially because in the current world of girly bands who don't write their own music, Avril does, and she does it quite well....Our Lady Peace: good good stuff. I think Clumsy is the best disc overall--so many memories of warming up for soccer games blasting those weird but totally sweet melodies...

Hootie is the epitome of 90's rock. Third Day (unfortunately) actually started out as a copy band to appeal to Christians. Thank God that didn't last (not that I don't like Hootie, but I do hate Christian copy bands)!

Nate Dog, I can definitely relate to marveling in front of speakers, but with country music? C'mon, man. If I didn't like you so much I'd have to kick you off this blog for even mentioning it....ok it's not that bad. :)

A ton (and I mean a ton) of my friends are U2 freaks, but I never got into much of their music other than the (primary) classics: Still Haven't Found, With or Without You, Stuck in A Moment, etc. I do love the song October, however. Hauntingly beautiful.

gfroese, I am a sucker for female vocalists as well. My two favorites are Sarah McLachlan and Sandra McCracken. Mmmmm....

Ooh, music! I like a lot of soundtracks - from anime, but also from Prince of Egypt, LotR, Moulin Rouge, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables.

I also enjoy Breaking Benjamin, Collective Soul, Dashboard Confessional, Lifehouse, Linkin Park, matchbox 20, Alanis Morissette, Switchfoot, Third Eye Blind (A LOT), Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Vertical Horizon, The Starting Line, and New Found Glory.

Yes, I alphabetize my CDs.

Ha ha that's quality! I used to alphabetize my CDs, too--but I kept getting new ones and it was too much of a pain to rearrange everything....now I hardly even use my discs anymore cause I put everything on my iPod.

How could I have forgotten Vertical Horizon, Dashboard and Third Eye Blind? I love those guys, too!

I LOVE LES MISERABLES!!! I know practically every line of the entire show. I read the book over the summer before my senior year, and then we did the high school production of it, and then I saw it on Broadway in New York! Absolutely phenomenal show.
