They aren't evil, just misunderstood

There are times I want to believe the left is actually pro-America. Too often they show me I've simply "misunderestimated" them.

Baghdad - The Iraqi army said on Thursday it had seized a number of booby-trapped children's dolls, accusing insurgents of using the explosive-filled toys to target children. The dolls were found in a car, each one containing a grenade or other explosive, said an army statement. The government said that two men driving the car had been arrested in the western Baghdad district of Abu Ghraib. "This is the same type of doll as that handed out on several occasions by US soldiers to children," said government spokesperson Leith Kubba. Now read this.
If we stop trying to figure out the other side, we've given up. The person on the other side is not evil. They just have a different perspective. The smartest people understand the enemy's point of view, because they understand what's driving them. And the left just keeps on sinking... If we lose the war in Iraq, it won't be for lack of military might, but for the external attempt by the terrorists to wear our support down by a continual insurgent presence and the internal attack by the left that sabatoges a war and its leader for political gain.

Acknowledging that the enemy is the right step. However, I think your conclusion is wrong.
If they are as evil as you think--and I would agree--what makes you think giving them democracy is a good thing? What makes you think that the war is going to work at all?
Right diagnosis. Follow this to its logical conclusion and you will begin to see the fallacy of this war.

Wiser, I think we may be getting some terms confused. I think the terrorists are evil, but the terrorists aren't the folks we're bringing democracy to; the non-terrorist/insurgent Iraqis are.
What makes me think giving them democracy is a good thing? That is a struggle I've had since the beginning. Sometimes I haven't seen any way that Islam and the Middle East culture is remotely compatible with a free system of government, especially considering the nature of Shariah law and the general oppression of women--to name a few. But other times I'm more optimistic, which brings me to your second question.
What makes me think the war is going to work at all? Plenty, no thanks to the MSM. The Iraqis themselves are more positive about the situation in Iraq than the American people, and especially the media. Most (I can't remember the exact stat) believe they are better off now than under Saddam. Much of the country is operating peacefully, with power and water levels and production at pre-war levels or higher. Millions of Iraqis have voted in recent elections, with more to come. An enjoyable and positive report on Congressman Col. John Kline is here. There is much to be pleased about in Iraq.
Now that we're in there, obviously I hope things go well.
I've read that 66% of the Iraqis believe that they are better off now. While oft quoted by proponents of the occupation, I think the stat is telling for another reason.
One out of three thinks they were better off under Saddam. This seems a bit high. You be optimistic, I'll stay pessimistic, yet hopeful.
