Yummy in my tummy
PETA's on it's newest crusade. This time it's against eating fish. It seems that fish are actually very intelligent and "fascinating individuals, yet they're so incredibley abused," says Karin Robertson of the Empathy Project newly began by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA's main argument is that, since modern research shows that fish are very advanced "[i]n many areas, such as memory, [and] their cognitive powers match or exceed those of 'higher' vertebrates, including non-human primates."
Oh! Last time I checked, we ate certain animals because they tasted good! Or--only recently--because it was healthy and a neccesary part of our diet. I'm sure that if monkeys turned out to taste like chicken, with the added bonus of providing valuable nutrients, we would eat them too. Since when has intelligence or "cognitive powers" played any role whatsoever in what meat we eat? The only reason we don't eat dogs (like they do in China) is because they are domesticated, and it's culturally unnacceptable, not because of Rover's advanced long-term memory.
Hungry? Let's all tread (water) over to Red Lobster--just for the halibut.
