So I'm sitting here at 3 am....it's been a fifty hour week working for a moving company and I am dog tired--yet I can't get to sleep. I have a music practice at ten which I am not looking forward to getting up for. My friend is sitting across the room playing Smash Brothers on N64, and I have no idea if what I'm typing is coherent.
The first time I heard the song "If You're Not the One" by Daniel Bedingfield, I thought to myself, "The words sound good and the music's alright, but if this is Justin Timberlake or some other retarted boy band member, I'm gonna shun this song no matter how good it is." So I researched Daniel Bedingfield and was relieved to find him acceptable. He's this Brit who records most of his stuff in his bedroom while in his underwear--admittedly a little weird but that's what I'd probably do if I wasn't signed and wanted to record, right? However, I also downloaded two other songs off his CD.....and they sucked. Bigtime. Sorry Daniel buddy, but "James Dean" is not a cool song.
Now, if anyone wants to hear an amazing solo artist, check out Derek Webb. He's originally of Caedmon's Call, but left the band a few years ago and started working on his solo record. That record, entitled "She Must and Shall Go Free," was released in June(?) of 2003 and is AMAZING. The songwriting is absolutely incredible--both lyrically and musically. For example, the chords on "Beloved" are so rich and full they give me shivers every time I hear them. The intro riff of "Nobody Loves Me" is so full-sounding. High quality, and highly recommended. More on Derek Webb and music in general later. Hmmm......maybe music would be a good general topic for this blog; I haven't really decided yet.
